Who We Are
‘Music Unites Jamaica Foundation’ (MUJF) is a non for profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) with the focus on the preservation and promotion of Jamaica's rich musical heritage. |
‘Music Unites Jamaica Foundation’ seeks to expand the awareness of Jamaica's vast and long-standing musical heritage through the presentation of symposia, music workshops and exhibitions, as well as free concerts island- wide; and by sourcing scholarships and instruments for talented students with financial constraints.
MUJF is committed to the research, preservation and promotion of the works of Jamaican composers of Classical, Patriotic, and Church music, as well music written for Theatre and Dance. The documentation of Jamaican Jazz musicians and Inter-cultural exchange activities are also part of our mission. Our aim is to make our Foundation a launching point for information on the Music of Jamaica outside of the genres of Folk and Popular Music. We intend to have biographical information and some sheet music, as well as recordings available for scholars and lovers of Jamaican music who wish to learn more about this vast history of music which so far has been largely overlooked. It is our vision to collaborate closely with all active stakeholders in music in Jamaica, such as the Ministry of Education; the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC); Unesco’s Creative Cities of Music Network; the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts (EMC); the University of the West Indies’ Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA); the Northern Caribbean University (NCU); the Jamaica Federation of Musicians and Affiliates Union; the Jamaica Association of Vintage Artists and Affiliates (JAVAA); the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JARIA); the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jamaica (POJ); and the National Youth Orchestra of Jamaica (NYOJ). |
